New Delhi: Prasar Bharati’s over-the-top (OTT) platform, “Waves,” has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 1 million downloads. The Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced this achievement on Twitter, sharing a promotional video highlighting the platform’s success.
Launched on World Television Day at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa earlier this year, Waves is available on Android, iOS, and web platforms. It offers a diverse range of content, including over 60 channels in 10 languages, encompassing news, entertainment, and sports. All Doordarshan and Akashvani channels are also accessible on the platform.
Waves is integrated with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), a government initiative aimed at connecting consumers with local sellers, demonstrating a unique approach to integrating e-commerce with entertainment. The platform supports streaming in SD, HD, and 4K resolutions, leveraging technology from RailTel for development and Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud and content delivery network (CDN) services.

Beyond mainstream content, Waves showcases student-made films and productions from renowned institutions like FTII, AAFT, and Annapurna. Furthermore, Central government ministries and state governments are collaborating with Prasar Bharati to contribute diverse content, including docudramas, dramatized shows, and reality programs, effectively utilizing these platforms to convey meaningful messages.
To further its initiatives in the media and entertainment sector, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is organizing the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) from February 5 to 9, 2025, in New Delhi. This global summit, sharing its name with the OTT platform, aims to serve as a leading platform for fostering trade collaboration, innovation, and dialogue within India’s media and entertainment industry.
