Para-archer Sheetal Devi becomes Hyundai India’s new brand ambassador

Hyundai Motor India has appointed 19-year-old para-archer Sheetal Devi as its brand ambassador, expanding a relationship that began through its Samarth by Hyundai initiative in 2023.

The appointment, announced on September 9, brings one of India’s leading para-athletes into Hyundai’s wider marketing and communications programme. The partnership will cover marketing campaigns as well as accessibility programmes, inclusion initiatives and social-impact communication.

Devi is currently ranked World No. 1 in para archery and is a world champion, Paralympic medallist and Arjuna Awardee. Hyundai says she is also a two-time world-record holder and has won three Asian Games medals. She became the first Indian para-archer to be selected for an able-bodied national team.

The association therefore has a longer history than a conventional celebrity or sports endorsement. Hyundai has been associated with Devi since 2023, when she became part of Samarth by Hyundai, the company’s programme focused on supporting para-athletes and accessibility.

From athlete endorsement to inclusion platform

For Hyundai, the new role gives the company an opportunity to connect its sports marketing with a broader corporate narrative around accessibility and inclusion.

Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India, said the company sees Devi as a symbol of what can happen when barriers are replaced by opportunities. He added that the partnership would seek to encourage conversations around inclusion, accessibility and equal opportunity.

Devi said she was honoured to associate with Hyundai and described the relationship as reflecting a shared belief in perseverance, inclusion and excellence.

That distinction matters for marketers. Sports partnerships are often built around reach, performance credentials and association with a particular audience. Hyundai’s stated plans put equal weight on programmes and communication outside conventional advertising.

The partnership also comes at a time when brands are under greater pressure to make inclusion visible through products, experiences and corporate behaviour, rather than restricting it to advertising messaging.

Why it matters to advertisers

The choice of Devi gives Hyundai several distinct storytelling routes. Her sporting achievements provide the immediate advertising narrative, while her association with accessibility creates scope for longer-term content and purpose-led communication.

For agencies, that creates a different brief from a standard ambassador campaign. The opportunity is not simply to put a recognisable face into a film, but to build a sustained set of stories around sport, mobility, accessibility and representation.

It also gives Hyundai continuity. The brand is not introducing an athlete with no prior relationship to the company. The ambassador announcement formalises an association that has already existed for three years.

That history can make future communication more credible, provided the partnership continues to produce tangible programmes alongside campaigns.

What to watch next

The immediate question is how Hyundai uses Devi beyond advertising films and brand appearances.

The company has specifically said the partnership will extend into accessibility programmes, inclusion initiatives and social-impact communication. The execution of those initiatives will determine whether the association develops into a longer-term platform or remains primarily an endorsement.

For the advertising industry, the partnership is also another example of para-sport moving into mainstream brand communication. Devi’s profile gives Hyundai a high-performance sporting story, but the company’s stated brief gives the relationship a wider remit.

MediaNoise Take

Hyundai’s choice of Sheetal Devi is interesting because the value of the partnership does not depend only on her sporting fame. The existing relationship gives the brand a credible starting point, while her achievements give agencies enough material to build mainstream campaigns around performance and ambition.

The more significant test will be what happens outside the campaign film. Accessibility programmes, content and real-world initiatives will give the partnership substance that an endorsement alone cannot provide. It also raises the bar for other brands working with para-athletes. As more athletes from para-sport enter mainstream advertising, brands will have to think beyond representation in casting and consider what the partnership actually enables.
