New Delhi: Ireland’s commitment to expanding its global reach has been solidified following the successful conclusion of Hon. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science, James Lawless’s significant visit to India. This landmark trip, spanning New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, has paved the way for enhanced collaboration between the two nations across multiple sectors.

Minister Lawless’s itinerary was packed with high-level engagements, including meetings with government officials, business leaders, and academic institutions, all aimed at fostering synergies in research, education, trade, and innovation. The visit, strategically timed to coincide with Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, served as a platform to build upon existing relationships and initiate new partnerships. Discussions focused on attracting key investments, establishing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between universities, and facilitating the expansion of Irish businesses into the burgeoning Indian market.

A key highlight of the visit was Minister Lawless’s participation in the prestigious Raisina Dialogue, where he contributed to vital conversations on migration, education, economic growth, and cultural connectivity. His role as a distinguished speaker underscored Ireland’s dedication to collaborative policymaking and its position as a global hub for education, technology, and foreign investment.

The strengthening of trade and investment ties was a central focus of the visit. Minister Lawless engaged in strategic dialogues with clients of IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland, as well as prominent Indian business leaders, reinforcing Ireland’s appeal as a prime European gateway for Indian enterprises. The signing of MoUs between Enterprise Ireland and key industry partners, including the Association of Healthcare Providers in India and T-Hub, Hyderabad’s innovation hub, promises to accelerate the adoption of Irish technology in India’s healthcare, ICT, and green technology sectors.

Education and research received significant attention, with Minister Lawless leading Vice Chancellors and Education Policy Roundtables in Mumbai and Chennai. He also held strategic discussions with IIT Delhi and IIT Madras to explore collaborative research initiatives and student exchange programs. These efforts aim to cultivate stronger academic partnerships between Ireland and India.

Minister Lawless’s interactions with Indian policymakers at both national and state levels focused on exploring bilateral initiatives in higher education and trade. Special emphasis was placed on supporting India’s rapidly growing fintech and medtech sectors, creating new avenues for Irish businesses and academic institutions.

The visit also featured St. Patrick’s Day receptions in Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, bringing together key stakeholders from government, business, and academia to celebrate Ireland’s expanding presence in India. These gatherings reinforced the strong bond between the two nations and highlighted Ireland’s strategic focus on global partnerships.

Beyond formal engagements, Minister Lawless connected with the Irish diaspora, business associations, and social impact organizations, reaffirming Ireland’s commitment to fostering strong people-to-people connections. His engagement with students at the Asha Foundation in Delhi underscored Ireland’s dedication to educational empowerment and social impact initiatives in India.

“India is a country of immense talent, innovation, and opportunity, and it has been a privilege to engage with its dynamic leaders across government, education, and business,” stated Minister James Lawless. “This visit reaffirms Ireland’s commitment to deepening our collaboration in research, education, trade, and investment, with Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland playing a crucial role in fostering these partnerships, supported by Ireland’s Embassy and Consulates in India.”

Minister Lawless added, “The partnerships forged this week demonstrate our shared commitment to a prosperous and forward-looking relationship. The establishment of a joint economic commission, among other initiatives, signifies a new era of strengthened bilateral relations between Ireland and India, setting the stage for increased cooperation and mutual growth.
