New Delhi: Indian author Arundhati Roy, known for her powerful writing and social activism, has been awarded the prestigious PEN Pinter Prize for 2024. This news comes just weeks after Indian authorities approved legal action against Roy based on comments she made 14 years ago.
The PEN Pinter Prize, established in 2009 by English PEN, honors writers of exceptional literary merit who confront the world’s complexities with unwavering honesty. Roy, a Booker Prize winner for her debut novel “The God of Small Things,” perfectly embodies this spirit.
Her writings delve into critical issues like human rights violations in India, global conflicts, and the impact of capitalism. Roy’s voice has been a constant force for justice, prompting praise from the PEN Pinter Prize committee.

“Arundhati Roy tells urgent stories of injustice with wit and beauty,” remarked Ruth Borthwick, Chair of English PEN. “While India remains a central theme in her work, she is a truly international thinker whose powerful voice cannot be silenced.”
The 62-year-old author faces potential prosecution by the Indian government for comments made in 2010 regarding Kashmir, a highly sensitive topic in the country. Roy’s outspoken nature and criticism of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly concerning alleged discrimination against Muslims and declining press freedoms, have made her a target for right-wing groups.
Despite the legal challenges, Roy remains undeterred. She will be formally awarded the PEN Pinter Prize on October 10th at a ceremony co-hosted by the British Library. This prestigious award joins the ranks of other accolades bestowed upon Roy, including those received by literary giants like Michael Rosen, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, and Tom Stoppard.
“I wish Harold Pinter were here today to write about the world’s current, almost incomprehensible state,” Roy said upon receiving the news. “In his absence, some of us must strive to fill his shoes.”
Arundhati Roy’s unwavering commitment to truth and justice, both in her writing and activism, continues to inspire readers worldwide. The PEN Pinter Prize recognition further cements her position as a literary force to be reckoned with.
