NEW DELHI:- Griffith University and Manipal Academy of Higher Education have announced a major expansion of their long-standing academic partnership with the launch of a Dual Award Doctoral Programme and plans to establish the Griffith–MAHE Centre of Research Excellence in India.
The collaboration marks one of the most significant India-focused initiatives undertaken by Griffith University and is aimed at strengthening doctoral education, interdisciplinary research, academic mobility, and global innovation between the two institutions.

Under the newly launched Dual Award Doctoral Programme, PhD scholars will be jointly supervised by faculty members from both universities while remaining enrolled at both institutions simultaneously. Students completing the programme will receive doctoral degrees from both universities through a single jointly delivered research pathway.
The programme is initially focused on health and transdisciplinary research, with future expansion planned across engineering, information technology, digital health, sustainability, sports science, humanities, and other emerging interdisciplinary sectors.
As part of the collaboration, the institutions will also establish the Griffith–MAHE Centre of Research Excellence at the MAHE campus, envisioned as a long-term platform for collaborative innovation, global research partnerships, and high-impact academic engagement.
To support early-stage projects and collaborative research initiatives, both institutions have jointly committed AUD 100,000 each towards a seed funding programme over the next three years. The initiative is expected to accelerate publications, proof-of-concept studies, international grant opportunities, and industry-linked research collaborations.
Carolyn Evans described the partnership as one of Griffith University’s most significant international academic collaborations, highlighting its role in strengthening research ties between Australia and India while creating globally connected opportunities for doctoral scholars.
Sharath K. Rao said globally connected research and interdisciplinary collaboration are becoming increasingly important in addressing evolving societal and technological challenges, adding that the expanded partnership would strengthen innovation and international knowledge exchange.
Madhu Veeraraghavan stated that the initiative would provide scholars access to international expertise, collaborative research ecosystems, and globally relevant academic opportunities while strengthening MAHE Bengaluru’s focus on research-led innovation.

The announcement coincides with Griffith University’s 50th anniversary celebrations and comes amid growing momentum in India–Australia cooperation across education, innovation, and research sectors.
Abhinav Bhatia said the partnership reflects the increasing value of long-term institutional collaboration between India and Australia in building global talent pipelines and advancing impactful research initiatives.
By combining MAHE’s academic and clinical ecosystem in India with Griffith University’s international research capabilities, the collaboration aims to contribute solutions across healthcare, sustainability, technology, and broader societal challenges.
