New Delhi: In a case raising questions about online reputation management and content moderation, news agency ANI Media has filed a defamation suit against Wikipedia in the Delhi High Court. ANI claims that certain content on its Wikipedia page is defamatory and seeks to have it removed.
The lawsuit, filed earlier today, targets specific entries on ANI’s Wikipedia page that criticize its news practices and management style. ANI further alleges that the platform has falsely accused them of editorializing news stories to blame Muslims for crimes during specific events.

Justice Navin Chawla has issued a notice to Wikipedia in response to ANI’s plea for interim relief, which seeks to prevent the platform from publishing the disputed content. The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 20, 2024.
ANI is also seeking Rs. 2 crores (approximately $250,000 USD) in damages from Wikipedia. Their lawyers argue that while Wikipedia allows users to edit content, the platform itself cannot act like a private entity and has restricted ANI’s ability to edit its own page.

Wikipedia, on the other hand, is known for its open-source editing model, where users can contribute and edit content. The platform emphasizes the right to diverse viewpoints and opinions. However, the Delhi High Court has acknowledged ANI’s claim of defamation while also recognizing Wikipedia’s right to host opinions.
This lawsuit has sparked discussions about the responsibility of online platforms in moderating user-generated content, particularly when it concerns sensitive topics. It remains to be seen how the court will balance the right to freedom of expression with the protection of an organization’s reputation in the digital age.
ANI had also sued Press Trust of India last week over copyright infringement.
