New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has unveiled its recommendations for the ‘National Broadcasting Policy-2024’, presenting a comprehensive blueprint aimed at bolstering India’s broadcasting ecosystem over the next decade. This policy outlines a strategic roadmap, focusing intensively on the upcoming five years, to foster a resilient and technologically agile infrastructure.
Central to the policy is the ambition to establish India as a global ‘Uplinking Hub’ for television channels, aimed at attracting investments, boosting employment, and promoting skill development. The framework also emphasizes promoting indigenous manufacturing, enhancing research and development capabilities, and fostering a conducive environment for business growth.
“The National Broadcasting Policy-2024 aims to create a robust broadcasting environment through growth-oriented policies and regulations, supported by data-driven governance,” highlighted TRAI officials.

Key objectives include ensuring equitable access to broadcasting services, fostering quality content production across television, radio, and OTT platforms, and promoting Indian content both domestically and internationally. The policy also seeks to implement a transparent audience measurement and rating system to bolster credibility and reliability across media platforms.
Yasin Hamidani, Director at Media Care Brand Solutions, commented on the policy’s potential impact: “The introduction of a transparent audience measurement system is a significant stride towards enhancing trust and accuracy in broadcasting metrics. This initiative is poised to foster fair competition, drive innovation in content creation, and accommodate diverse players in the media landscape.”
However, challenges such as technological investment requirements and potential resistance from established stakeholders loom large. Addressing these concerns while ensuring data security and privacy will be crucial for the successful implementation of the policy.
The National Broadcasting Policy-2024 represents a pivotal initiative aimed at steering India’s broadcasting sector towards greater accountability and inclusivity, aligned with rapid technological advancements. Stakeholders anticipate a transformative impact that could reshape the industry landscape in the years to come.
