New Delhi: Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the esteemed founder of the ETV Telugu news and entertainment network, passed away at the age of 87 in Hyderabad. Rao, who had been receiving medical treatment in recent days, breathed his last at 4:50 am, as reported by ETV Telangana, a channel under the Ramoji Group.
Ramoji Rao, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, is widely celebrated for his immense contributions to media and entertainment. His visionary work led to the creation of Ramoji Film City, the world’s largest integrated film production facility, located in the heart of Telangana’s capital.
Born on November 16, 1936, Ramoji Rao’s entrepreneurial journey began with the launch of Eenadu in 1974, a Telugu language daily newspaper that swiftly rose to prominence. His impact on the Telugu film industry is profound, having produced over 50 films and telefilms, significantly shaping the regional cinema landscape.

Rao’s mortal remains have been transferred to his residence at Ramoji Film City, where he spent much of his life building his media empire.
The Ramoji Group, founded by Rao, has diversified into various business sectors, reflecting his versatile entrepreneurial spirit. Besides media, the group includes Margadarsi Chit Fund, Ramadevi Public School, Priya Foods, Kalanjali, and the Dolphin Group of Hotels in Andhra Pradesh. Each of these ventures stands as a testament to his business acumen and dedication to excellence.
