New Delhi: In a significant development in the Indian media landscape, Sitaraman Shankar, the Editor of Deccan Herald and CEO of Printers Mysore, announced his resignation on Tuesday. Shankar, a seasoned media veteran with over three decades of experience, has steered the company through turbulent times, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a steep rise in newsprint costs.
Shankar, who joined Deccan Herald in 2018, was the first outsider to helm the editorial role in 35 years. His tenure was marked by several key initiatives, including a redesign of the newspaper, the launch of popular weekend editions, and a new mobile app. Under his leadership, the Deccan Herald gained recognition for its strong editorial voice and expanded its journalistic team.
Prior to Deccan Herald, Shankar held prominent positions at leading media organizations such as Reuters, Hindustan Times, Economic Times, and Network18. He played a pivotal role in revamping Moneycontrol, India’s largest financial news website, during his stint at Network18.

Beyond his journalistic achievements, Shankar has been a vocal advocate for the media industry. In a recent TedX talk, he emphasized the importance of paid news subscriptions and highlighted the challenges faced by traditional media in an era of misinformation.
While Shankar’s resignation comes as a surprise to many, it is understood that he will continue in his role for the next few months to ensure a smooth transition. The media industry is watching closely as Deccan Herald embarks on a new chapter under fresh leadership.
