New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shazia Ilmi has initiated a defamation lawsuit against veteran journalist Rajdeep Sardesai. The case centers around a video uploaded by Sardesai, in which Ilmi is allegedly seen “abusing” a video journalist from India Today.
The video, which has garnered widespread attention, purportedly shows an altercation between Ilmi and the India Today journalist. Ilmi, however, has categorically denied the accusations, stating that the video has been misrepresented and taken out of context, thereby tarnishing her reputation.
The Delhi High Court has now intervened in the matter, directing Rajdeep Sardesai and the legal representatives of India Today to present the complete, unedited version of the video in court. The order was issued during the initial hearing of the defamation case, with the court emphasizing the need for a comprehensive examination of the footage before making any legal determinations.

The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13, where the court will review the full video evidence. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for both the media and political circles, as it touches upon issues of journalistic integrity and the limits of free speech.
Shazia Ilmi, a prominent BJP spokesperson, has expressed her dismay over the incident, asserting that the video has been used to unfairly portray her in a negative light. She has demanded an apology from Sardesai and India Today, along with the removal of the video from all platforms.
Rajdeep Sardesai, a well-known figure in Indian journalism, has yet to make a public statement regarding the lawsuit. His legal team is expected to argue that the video was published in good faith and in the public interest.
As the legal proceedings continue, the case has sparked a broader debate about the responsibilities of journalists in reporting and the potential consequences of defamation claims on press freedom.
