New Delhi: Amazon India is reportedly planning to launch its quick commerce service by December 2024, according to sources cited by Reuters. The service, codenamed “Tez,” will initially focus on delivering groceries and daily essentials. This move will pit Amazon against established players like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart in the rapidly growing quick commerce market.
Amazon is reportedly accelerating its launch timeline, with a final decision expected during the company’s December review meeting. The announcement may coincide with Amazon’s annual Smbhav event.
To facilitate quick deliveries, Amazon is setting up dark stores, managing stock-keeping units (SKUs), and building a robust logistics network. The company is also actively hiring for the project, describing it as a “ground-up project in an upcoming and fast-growing e-commerce space.”

This strategic move comes amidst several organizational changes within Amazon India. Samir Kumar recently took over as head of Amazon India, and the company is planning to relocate its Bengaluru headquarters to a new facility near the airport in January 2025.
Entering the quick commerce market will allow Amazon to leverage its existing e-commerce expertise and vast customer base. However, the company faces stiff competition from established players who have already captured significant market share.
The quick commerce market in India has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years, driven by increasing demand for fast and convenient delivery of essential items. With Amazon’s entry, the competition is likely to intensify, potentially benefiting consumers with more choices and competitive prices.
