NEW DELHI:- Access Life Assistance Foundation, in collaboration with Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Chellaram Foundation, has launched a dedicated support centre in Manipal for children undergoing Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) treatment.
The newly inaugurated ‘Home Away from Home’ facility has been developed to support paediatric cancer patients receiving treatment at Kasturba Hospital and aims to address non-medical challenges faced by families during prolonged and intensive treatment cycles.

The 10-unit facility has been specially designed for children undergoing Bone Marrow Transplant procedures, where maintaining strict hygiene, controlled environments, and safe recovery spaces is critical due to severely compromised immunity levels during treatment and post-transplant recovery.
The centre was inaugurated at the MAHE campus in Manipal in the presence of senior medical, academic, and philanthropic leaders including H S Ballal, Ashok Gavande, Anand Venugopal, Avinash Shetty, Anil K Bhat, Harinarayan Sharma, Vasudeva Bhat K, and Girish Nair.

This marks Access Life’s second support centre established in collaboration with MAHE, strengthening the organisations’ long-term focus on holistic paediatric cancer care beyond hospital infrastructure alone.
H S Ballal said healthcare support must extend beyond medical treatment and include emotional, social, and logistical support systems for families navigating critical illnesses. He added that facilities like these help reduce treatment abandonment and ease the burden on families travelling long distances for specialised care.
Girish Nair stated that non-medical challenges such as accommodation, nutrition, transportation, and distance from treatment centres continue to remain major barriers for underprivileged families dealing with childhood cancer treatment.
Access Life’s first 12-unit centre in Manipal, launched in 2022, has already supported nearly 350 beneficiaries. With the opening of the second centre, the organisation aims to extend support to more families while helping children continue treatment and recovery in a safe and family-oriented environment.

Vasudeva Bhat K noted that the new centre will further strengthen efforts to reduce treatment refusal and abandonment among children battling cancer by addressing social and logistical barriers affecting continuity of care.
Founded in 2014, Access Life currently operates 14 centres across 10 Indian cities and has supported more than 10,500 beneficiaries through accommodation, nutrition, counselling, transport, and educational support services for families undergoing cancer treatment.
