New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a directive to Indian media houses, urging them to ensure that their journalists adhere strictly to the visa regulations of foreign countries when undertaking reporting assignments. The XP Division of the MEA, in a communication addressed to media organizations, highlighted instances where Indian journalists have reportedly engaged in journalistic activities abroad while holding tourist visas, particularly in countries offering visa-on-arrival or online tourist visa facilities.

The MEA emphasized that for any journalistic work conducted by foreign nationals in India, a specific Journalist Visa (J-Visa) is mandatory. Utilizing any other type of visa for such activities is a clear breach of the Indian government’s visa rules. The ministry further pointed out that this practice is not unique to India, as many nations globally also require journalists to obtain specific press or journalist visas for reporting purposes within their borders. Information regarding these visa requirements is readily available on the websites of the respective embassies located in New Delhi.
The advisory comes in response to the MEA’s observation of Indian media outlets allegedly sending journalists on tourist visas to countries where such visas are easily obtainable. The ministry has requested media houses to sensitize their teams and ensure that Indian journalists traveling abroad for reporting purposes apply for and obtain the appropriate journalist visas before commencing their assignments. This measure aims to prevent any violation of international visa norms and potential repercussions for both the journalists and the media organizations involved.
The MEA’s communication underscores the importance of respecting the sovereignty and regulations of host countries. By adhering to the correct visa procedures, Indian media can ensure the smooth and lawful execution of their journalistic responsibilities on the global stage, fostering better international relations and avoiding any legal complications. The ministry’s proactive stance aims to promote ethical and compliant journalistic practices by Indian media houses operating internationally.
