New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry convened a symposium to explore the potential of emerging technologies in the broadcasting sector. The event, held on the sidelines of the India Mobile Congress, focused on Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting, 5G broadcasting, immersive technologies, and digital radio.
Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan emphasized the importance of content quality in the broadcasting revolution. He highlighted the government’s recent approval for establishing the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies in Mumbai to promote the AVGC-XR sector and encourage filmmaking in India. Murugan also stressed the ethical responsibility of content creators to ensure the veracity of information shared.
Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju highlighted the transformative potential of 5G, particularly when combined with immersive technologies like Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. He predicted significant growth in the AVGC-XR sector, which could boost startup culture and enhance content consumption experiences. Jaju also discussed the benefits of D2M broadcasting and mentioned the trials being conducted by Prasar Bharati in collaboration with IIT Kanpur and Saankhya Labs.

TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti emphasized the rapid growth of the media and entertainment sector, driven by new media platforms. He highlighted the transformative power of immersive technologies and the emergence of D2M broadcasting as an alternative content delivery technology. Lahoti also stressed the benefits of digital radio, especially in areas lacking television connections, and reiterated TRAI’s commitment to providing forward-looking regulations for the broadcasting sector.
The symposium explored the practical applications of emerging technologies in the broadcasting industry. Experts from the government and industry discussed topics such as immersive technologies, D2M and 5G broadcasting, and digital radio. The sessions covered use cases, challenges, and potential solutions for each technology.
TRAI recently provided recommendations for the formulation of a National Broadcasting Policy, which aims to address the evolving landscape of the broadcasting sector in India. The symposium provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to discuss and understand the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies.
