New Delhi: In a move that mirrors its streaming rival Netflix, Disney has announced plans to tighten its grip on password sharing for Disney+ subscribers. Starting September 2024, the entertainment giant will implement restrictions on account sharing in the United States, aiming to curb the practice of multiple households using a single account.
While the company hasn’t revealed specific details about similar measures for Indian subscribers, the development has sparked speculation about potential changes in the country.
Price Hike Looms
Coinciding with the crackdown on password sharing, Disney is set to increase subscription fees for its streaming platforms. Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu will see price hikes beginning in October.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has justified the price increases by promising to introduce new features, including ABC News Live and personalized playlists. These additions, according to Iger, will enhance the overall value proposition for subscribers.
Industry Trend
The decision by Disney to restrict password sharing follows a similar move by Netflix, which has already implemented such measures in India. The streaming industry is grappling with the challenge of balancing subscriber growth with revenue generation, and these measures are seen as attempts to address this issue.
It remains to be seen how Disney’s subscribers will react to the changes. While some may be disappointed by the crackdown and price hikes, others may welcome the additional features and improved content offerings.
