New Delhi: India’s prestigious journalism school, the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM) near Bengaluru, has announced its closure due to a significant decline in admissions. Media reports confirm that the institute has already sent emails to candidates for the 2024-25 academic year, requesting their bank details to facilitate a fee refund.
The email from IIJNM management read, “The management of the Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media (IIJNM) regrets to inform you that we will no longer offer programmes in Journalism. This decision was reached as the number of applicants so far this year is far below what is needed for a viable programme.”
Known for its excellence in journalism education over the past 24 years, IIJNM cited financial viability as the primary reason for its closure. The email elaborated, “The recent environment in which we have been operating, it is not possible to attract enough students to avoid huge financial losses to continue the programme.”

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, the institute requested the banking information of the new batch of students to ensure a prompt refund. “Without waiting for the planned start of the course this year on July 22, 2024, we are giving you notice of closing down our beloved Institution. We recognize it might pose some difficulty for you, but we have no other choice,” the email continued. The message assured students that the refund process would be completed within ten days of receiving the necessary banking details.
This closure marks the end of an era for IIJNM, which has been a cornerstone of journalism education in India. The institute’s decision underscores the challenges faced by educational institutions in maintaining enrollment and financial sustainability in a rapidly changing landscape.
