X, formerly Twitter, has released its first transparency report since Elon Musk's takeover, providing insights into user reports, enforcement actions, and government requests.

New Delhi: In a move towards greater transparency, X (formerly Twitter), now under the ownership of billionaire Elon Musk, has released its first transparency report since the company’s acquisition in October 2022. The report offers a detailed overview of user reports on content violations, enforcement actions taken, and government requests for content removal during the first six months of 2024.

According to the report, X received a staggering 224 million user reports between January and June 2024. The majority of these reports, amounting to 82 million, were related to abuse and harassment. Other significant categories included hateful conduct and violent content.

In response to these reports, X took decisive action. The platform suspended 5.3 million accounts and removed or labeled 10.7 million posts that violated its community guidelines. Additionally, X received 18,737 government requests for information, complying with 53% of these requests. The European Union was the leading source of such requests, followed by the United States.

Governments around the world also made 72,703 requests to remove content from X. The platform took action in 71% of these cases.

Since Musk’s takeover, X has undergone several notable changes, including significant staff layoffs, a relaxation of content moderation rules, a rebranding from Twitter to X, and the introduction of a paid verification system. These changes have sparked ongoing debates about the platform’s approach to content moderation and user safety.

The transparency report provides a valuable glimpse into X’s efforts to address content violations and comply with government requests. It sheds light on the scale of the challenges faced by the platform and the steps it is taking to maintain a safe and inclusive online environment.
