New Delhi: Sleep solutions brand Wakefit has joined the chorus of critics lambasting L&T chairperson SN Subrahmanyan for his controversial suggestion of a 90-hour workweek, including Sundays. In a humorous ad campaign, Wakefit highlights the potential for marital discord arising from such an extreme work schedule.
The 30-second spot, set to the Nepali song “Sunday Morning Love You,” depicts a husband completely engrossed in his work, much to his wife’s dismay. The wife, exasperated by her husband’s neglect, slaps him and demands to know who will love her on Sundays. When the husband replies, “How long can I stare at you?”, he receives another slap.
The ad then emphasizes the importance of quality sleep, suggesting that a good night’s rest on a Wakefit mattress can prevent such marital conflicts. This campaign, dubbed “Gaddagiri,” is known for its witty take on viral news and social issues.

Subrahmanyan’s comments and the subsequent defense from L&T have sparked widespread outrage and criticism. Media reports revealing his substantial salary further fueled the controversy.
The criticism extended beyond the general public, with prominent figures from Indian industry openly condemning the L&T chair’s views. Rajiv Bajaj, managing director of Bajaj Auto, challenged Subrahmanyan to lead by example. Mahindra Group chairperson Anand Mahindra humorously countered the statement, emphasizing the importance of family life.
Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, echoed Mahindra’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of work-life balance and prioritizing quality over quantity. Harsh Goenka, chair of the RPG Group, criticized the notion of a 90-hour workweek, emphasizing the importance of employee well-being.
Even Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone expressed her shock at Subrahmanyan’s comments on Instagram, further criticizing L&T’s defense of the chairperson.
Wakefit’s ad campaign, while humorous, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of work-life balance and the potential negative consequences of prioritizing work over personal well-being.
