New Delhi: A parliamentary committee is set to delve into the pressing issue of fake news. Chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology will convene on November 21 to review mechanisms aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation.
The committee has invited representatives from key media bodies, including the News Broadcasters and Digital Association (NBDA) and the Editors Guild of India (EGI), to share their insights and recommendations.
This move comes as concerns over the proliferation of fake news continue to grow, with its potential to mislead the public and erode trust in traditional media. The committee’s examination will likely focus on identifying effective strategies to combat the dissemination of false information, while also considering the potential impact on freedom of speech and expression.

In addition to addressing the fake news challenge, the committee will also explore other pressing issues such as the emergence of new technologies like artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency. It will examine the potential benefits and risks associated with these technologies, as well as the need for appropriate regulations to ensure their responsible use.
The committee’s review of the functioning of public broadcaster Prasar Bharati and its analysis of digital and cybercrime regulations highlight the broader scope of its inquiry. By addressing these diverse issues, the parliamentary panel aims to contribute to a more informed and digitally empowered society.
