New Delhi: MTV Hustle, the popular Indian hip-hop reality show, has found itself at the center of a social media firestorm after Bengaluru-based YouTuber Rohan Cariappa accused the show of unlawfully taking down his videos. The controversy erupted when Cariappa posted a critique of judge Ikka for wearing a Harley-Davidson jacket on the show despite Royal Enfield being an official sponsor.

Cariappa’s video, which highlighted this apparent conflict of interest, quickly gained traction online. Shortly after, the YouTuber alleged that MTV Hustle had issued copyright strikes against his channel, resulting in the removal of several of his videos. This move sparked outrage among fans and fellow creators, who accused MTV of censorship and stifling free speech. The hashtag #ShameonMTVHUSTLE quickly began trending on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.

Adding fuel to the fire, BoAt, one of the show’s sponsors, released a statement (later deleted) emphasizing its commitment to creative freedom and expressing disapproval of actions that limit the ability of creators to comment or critique. This statement was widely interpreted as a rebuke of MTV Hustle’s actions.

Facing mounting pressure, MTV Hustle issued a statement asserting its support for the hip-hop community and its appreciation for constructive feedback. However, the statement failed to include an apology to Cariappa, further intensifying the backlash.

In the latest development, Cariappa announced on Instagram that his YouTube channel has been reinstated. He also revealed plans to release a detailed video about the entire incident, promising to shed more light on the situation.

This controversy raises important questions about freedom of expression and the power dynamics between large media organizations and independent creators. As the story continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how MTV Hustle will address the concerns raised and regain the trust of its viewers.
