New Delhi: Journalists covering the Parliament staged a protest today, alleging that they were confined to a particular area within the Parliament premises. The Press Club of India highlighted the issue on Twitter, stating, “Journalists stage protest in Parliament against restrictions on their movement in the premises and also they were removed to stand in front of ‘Makar Dwar’. At this Dwar, they used to interact with Parliamentarians from all sides. We demand lifting of restrictions imposed on them.”
The protest emerged from the growing frustration among journalists who felt their freedom to report was being severely curtailed. The restricted movement has limited their ability to interact with Members of Parliament (MPs) and gather firsthand information. Traditionally, the Parliament House entrance has served as a spot for journalists to engage with MPs from various political affiliations, providing a crucial platform for direct communication, stories and media bytes.

The opposition quickly seized the opportunity to criticize the government’s actions. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram took to Twitter, expressing his discontent with the situation. “They first took over independent agencies. Media remained quiet. In fact, hailed it as Masterstroke. They then exerted domination over the Judiciary. Media remained quiet. In fact, hailed it as Masterstroke. They have now shunted the media. Will it still remain quiet and hail it as Masterstroke?” Chidambaram’s tweet underscored a broader concern about the erosion of democratic institutions and the role of the media in holding power to account.
