New Delhi: In a recent legal development, the Bombay High Court has issued a temporary injunction against Apollo Tyres, preventing the company from airing an advertisement campaign that allegedly disparages CEAT Tyres.
The dispute arose when CEAT discovered a YouTube video by Apollo promoting its Apterra AT2 tyre for the Mahindra THAR. The video, CEAT claimed, unfairly depicted its CROSSDRIVE AT tyre as worn out while obscuring its CEAT trademark.
CEAT argued that Apollo’s campaign falsely portrays CEAT tyres as inferior in quality. The court agreed, stating that the advertisement could mislead consumers and cause harm to CEAT’s brand.

The court’s decision is a significant victory for CEAT, which has invested substantial resources in developing unique tread patterns for its tyres. By issuing the injunction, the court has recognized CEAT’s right to protect its brand and reputation.
While Apollo has been temporarily restrained from airing the commercial, the case is set for a full hearing on October 11. The outcome of the hearing could have far-reaching implications for the tyre industry and the standards for advertising in India.
