New Delhi: In a significant leadership transition, Bharti Airtel announced today the appointment of Shashwat Sharma as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective January 1, 2026. Currently serving as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Sharma will take over the reins from Gopal Vittal, who will be elevated to the position of Vice Chairman.
This strategic move is part of Airtel’s well-structured succession plan, ensuring a seamless transition of leadership. As CEO designate, Sharma will assume responsibility for overseeing the entire consumer business operations, positioning him to take the helm in 2026.
Vittal, who has been instrumental in Airtel’s growth and success over the past 12 years, will continue to lead the India business in his new role as Vice Chairman. Additionally, he will take on broader telecom responsibilities across the group, including strategic guidance for Airtel Africa Plc and driving synergies in areas such as network strategy, digital and technology, procurement, and talent.
