New Delhi: In an effort to bolster the safety of its younger users, Instagram has launched a print advertisement campaign in the Times of India, prominently featuring its suite of over 50 safety tools. This initiative is part of Meta’s Family Centre, a broader effort to provide parents with the necessary resources to protect their children’s online experiences.
Published on June 25, the front-page advertisement highlights Instagram’s Sensitive Content Control feature. This tool is designed to help users manage the types of content they encounter, aiming to reduce exposure to potentially disturbing or harmful posts. It is a key component of Meta’s Family Centre, which encompasses a range of features tailored to enhance teen safety on the platform.
Instagram’s Family Centre tools include:
Sensitive Content Control: Allows users to filter the content they see, minimizing exposure to inappropriate or harmful material.
Activity Monitoring: Provides parents with insights into their children’s Instagram usage, promoting healthier time management.
Direct Messages Controls: Enables parents to regulate who can contact their children via direct messages, mitigating the risk of unwanted interactions.
Educational Resources: Offers guidance for parents on discussing online safety and mental health with their children.
This initiative comes at a time of heightened awareness and concern over the impact of social media on teenagers’ mental health. Numerous studies have linked heavy social media use with increased rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among teens. For instance, a 2020 report by the Royal Society for Public Health revealed that 70% of teenagers experienced cyberbullying on social media, with 41% reporting feelings of anxiety or depression as a result. Additionally, research from the American Psychological Association found that teens spending more than three hours per day on social media are more likely to experience mental health issues.

The prevalence of graphic and sensitive content on visually driven platforms like Instagram adds to these concerns. Over the years, Instagram has faced significant criticism over its handling of such content. In 2017, the platform came under fire when its algorithms were found to promote pro-eating disorder content, easily accessible through specific hashtags. This controversy led to increased pressure on Instagram to improve its content moderation.
Another major controversy erupted in 2021 when leaked documents, known as the “Facebook Files,” exposed Instagram’s detrimental effects on teenage mental health. These internal documents revealed that Instagram worsened body image issues for one in three teenage girls and contributed to anxiety and depression among young users. This disclosure sparked widespread calls for stricter regulations and enhanced safety measures on social media platforms.
Instagram’s recent advertisement campaign in the Times of India underscores its commitment to addressing these issues and enhancing the safety of its platform for younger users. By promoting its Family Centre tools, Instagram aims to empower parents with the tools they need to protect their children and foster a healthier online environment.
