MIB Adds Consumer Affairs Representative to IDC for TV Ads and Programmes Regulation

The MIB strengthened TV content regulation by including a consumer affairs representative in the Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC) to address consumer-related issues arising from advertisements and programs.
The inclusion of a consumer affairs representative aims to better address issues like misleading ads and unfair trade practices in television programs.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has strengthened its regulatory oversight of television content by including a representative from the Department of Consumer Affairs in the Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC). This move aims to enhance the committee’s ability to address consumer-related issues arising from advertisements and programs aired on private satellite TV channels.

The IDC, established in 2021, plays a crucial role in investigating and addressing complaints regarding violations of the Programme and Advertising Codes by television broadcasters. The committee comprises representatives from various government ministries, including Home Affairs, External Affairs, and Defence, as well as industry bodies such as the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The inclusion of a representative from the Department of Consumer Affairs is significant, given the increasing prevalence of consumer-related issues arising from television advertisements. This move will bring valuable expertise and insights to the IDC, enabling it to better address concerns such as misleading advertisements, unfair trade practices, and violations of consumer rights.

The revised composition of the IDC now includes the Joint Secretary (Consumer Affairs) as a member, alongside representatives from other government ministries and industry bodies. The committee will continue to play a vital role in ensuring that television content adheres to the prescribed codes and regulations, thereby protecting the interests of viewers and promoting responsible broadcasting practices.
