New Delhi: The Indian government is taking a tough stance on protein supplements, with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) set to introduce stricter regulations. This move comes after a study revealed widespread concerns about the accuracy of information and certifications on protein supplement products.
According to media reports, the FSSAI found that many protein powders and shakes available on store shelves, in gyms, and on e-commerce platforms like Healthkart and Amazon, contain questionable health claims and potentially inaccurate nutritional information.
“A significant number of protein products in the market are more harmful than beneficial,” stated an FSSAI official. “The aim of these stricter regulations is to implement stringent norms to ensure public health is protected.”

This crackdown has the potential to significantly impact the booming protein supplement market, fueled by the rising focus on fitness. Manufacturers have capitalized on this trend, offering a wide range of “high-performance” protein powders priced anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 6,800 for a 2-3 kg jar.
The new regulations could lead to the banning of protein supplements that fail to meet the upcoming stricter guidelines. This includes products with misleading health claims or those lacking proper authorization and certification.
Consumers are advised to exercise caution while purchasing protein supplements. It’s crucial to check for FSSAI approval and verify the accuracy of health claims before making a purchase. Consulting a registered dietician or healthcare professional for guidance on protein supplement use is also recommended.
