New Delhi: History buffs and a new 52-episode television series is set to bring the life and legacy of legendary Assamese warrior Lachit Borphukan to life. This ambitious project is a collaboration between Prasar Bharati, India’s national broadcaster, and the Government of Assam.
The announcement came on August 12, 2024, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Smt. Meenakshi Das Nath, Director of Cultural Affairs for Assam, and Shri Amit Kumar, Deputy Director General (Content Sourcing) for Prasar Bharati. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Doordarshan Director General Ms. Kanchan Prasad.
This series promises to be a deep dive into Lachit Borphukan’s life, exploring his strategic brilliance, unwavering courage, and the lasting impact he left on history.
A Hero Remembered
Lachit Borphukan, who lived from 1622 to 1672, served as a prominent General in the Ahom Kingdom’s Royal Army. He is best known for his pivotal role in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where he led the Assamese forces to a decisive victory against the mighty Mughal Empire. This victory not only halted the Mughals’ expansionist ambitions under Emperor Aurangzeb but also remains a source of immense pride and inspiration for Assam.
