New Delhi: In a significant move to curb the pervasive influence of tobacco and alcohol consumption, the Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued a stern letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President, demanding immediate action against surrogate advertisements featuring cricketers.
The DGHS has expressed deep concern over the role models’ endorsement of products that pose severe health risks, particularly among the youth. The letter underscores the need for stringent measures to prevent cricketers from promoting tobacco and alcohol products through surrogate advertising.

The health body has specifically emphasized the importance of restricting such advertisements during high-profile events like the Indian Premier League (IPL), where the viewership is immense, and the impact on young minds is substantial.
The DGHS’s intervention comes amidst growing public health concerns over the rising prevalence of tobacco and alcohol consumption in the country. The health ministry believes that by curbing surrogate advertising, a crucial step can be taken towards promoting a healthier lifestyle and discouraging the consumption of harmful substances.
All eyes are now on the BCCI to respond to the DGHS’s demand and implement effective measures to protect the health and well-being of the public, especially the youth.
