New Delhi: The Indian government has taken a firm stance against the dissemination of obscene and vulgar content on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms. In a parliamentary statement on Wednesday, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L Murugan, revealed that 18 OTT platforms were blocked this year for violating the IT Rules of 2021.
These rules mandate that intermediaries, including OTT platforms, take proactive steps to prevent the display and dissemination of obscene or pornographic content. The regulations also outline a Code of Ethics for digital news publishers and OTT platforms, emphasizing adherence to journalistic standards and ethical guidelines.

The Minister further clarified that the government has the authority to issue directions for blocking content that threatens national sovereignty, security, public order, or incites the commission of offenses under the Information Technology Act, 2000. This action demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in the digital media landscape and ensuring the responsible use of online platforms.
